Welcome to Elder Class

Hello and welcome to the new school year! My name is Mr Cummings, and I am delighted to be teaching Elder Class this year. We are very fortunate to have Mrs Brennan and Mrs Romero working alongside us to support your children.

Reading

Reading is a key part of your child’s learning. We ask that children read at least four times each week at home, with an adult or older sibling recording it in their home reading diary. Diaries are checked on Fridays. Children can choose books from our class library, and can read additional appropriate books from home. After finishing a book, they will write a short review to show their understanding.

Spellings and Times Tables

Your child will receive a spelling grid each half term, showing the words to learn and the week commencing date of their weekly test (Fridays). Practising the meaning of words and using them in sentences really helps.

Times tables are also essential for maths progress. Regular practice at home is encouraged, and these will be tested every Friday alongside spellings. Children move on to the next set once they achieve full marks.

Homework

Homework is set on Monday and returned the following Monday. It usually includes English (grammar, punctuation, or comprehension) and maths calculations. Weekly spellings and times tables are also part of the homework. If your child finds anything challenging, please let us know so we can provide additional support in school.

PE

PE lessons take place on Fridays. Children should come to school in their PE kit, and trainers are needed if we go outside. For safety reasons, earrings should be removed before school on PE days.

Working Together

Your support at home makes a real difference to your child’s learning, and we look forward to a happy and successful year in Elder Class.
