Welcome back to a brand-new school year! Elder Class have made a fantastic start to Year 4 with Mr Cummings, Mrs Romero and Mrs Brennen. We’ve already been busy learning, creating and celebrating together, here are some of our highlights from our very first week.

English

We kicked off our new English topic with something really exciting – fireworks! We thought carefully about the best verbs, adjectives and adverbs to describe fireworks exploding in the sky. Once we had collected some great words, we put them together to write our very own short firework poems. Sharing them with the class was so much fun – everyone had different ideas and styles and we even performed them with actions in front of the class.

We have also begun reading The Firework-Maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman. Before we opened the book, we studied the front cover carefully, picking out details and making predictions about what the story might involve. We gave reasons for our ideas and even tried to back them up with evidence from the illustrations. To finish off the week, we enjoyed asking each other questions and using role play, we answered the questions pretending to be the character on the front cover of the book.

RE

This week we explored our school Mission Statement. Reading it together was really special because we realised how many important words and values are hidden inside it. We discussed which parts made us most proud to belong to St Clare’s and how we can show these values in our daily lives.

To celebrate our Mission Statement, we created a beautiful class display. We worked on three activities:

  • Art & Symbolism – We drew pictures showing our Mission Statement in action, like children being kind and families at prayer.
  • Writing – We wrote thoughtful prayers and promises about how we want to live out our Mission.
  • Creative Word Art – We decorated key words like Love, Respect, Grow and Family in bright colours, with illustrations to show what they mean in action.

Through this, we learned that our Mission Statement isn’t just words on a page, it’s a guide for how we can grow together as one school family, with Christ at the centre of everything we do.

Mass

On Thursday, we joined the whole school for a special Mass to celebrate the beginning of the new school year. It felt amazing to be together in prayer and song, reminding us that we are all part of one big family.

Meet the Teacher

A big thank you to those parents who were able to attend the Meet the Teacher evening on Thursday. It was lovely to see you and share our plans for the year ahead. If you weren’t able to make it, the presentation and half-term overview are now available on the class page on the school website.

Elder Class have made a brilliant start to Year 4. Thank you to all the children for their enthusiasm and hard work, and to parents for your continued support, we’re really looking forward to sharing the year ahead with you.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mr Cummings
