This week in Saplings, we have been continuing to consolidate our understanding of the numbers 1 to 4. Building a secure knowledge of these early numbers is incredibly important, as it provides the foundation for many mathematical concepts the children will learn throughout the year.

We explore each number in lots of different ways, including rote counting, one-to-one correspondence, subitising (recognising small quantities without counting), finding and matching numerals, and investigating 2D and 3D shapes by talking about the number of sides, corners and faces they have. By developing a deep understanding of each number, children become more confident mathematicians and are better prepared for future learning.

We make our number learning fun and memorable through games, songs, practical activities and by giving each number its own special action. We will be sharing photos of these actions on the blog so that families can practise them at home. The actions are a fantastic way to reinforce learning and support children in developing strong mathematical understanding as the year progresses.

We are so proud of the enthusiasm the children have shown while exploring our numbers and shapes! 😊
