We have had another fantastic week of learning in Year 1 and Year 2, with lots of opportunities to develop our skills across the curriculum. Here is a little look at what we have been learning.
In mathematics, we have been developing our understanding of place value.
The children have been exploring numbers and thinking carefully about what each digit represents. We have used practical resources, pictures and number activities to help us understand how numbers are made.
Developing a secure understanding of place value is really important as it provides the foundations for lots of our future mathematics learning.
🏠 Try it at home: Choose a number and ask your child what they can tell you about it. You could also practise counting forwards and backwards together.
Our English learning has been inspired by the wonderful story The Gruffalo.
We have enjoyed reading and discussing the story, we have been investigating how sentences are written correctly. In particular, we have been learning about:
- Capital letters
- Full stops
- Question marks
- Exclamation marks
The children have been thinking carefully about which punctuation mark belongs at the end of different sentences and how punctuation helps us understand what we are reading.
🏠 Try it at home: When reading a bedtime story, see if your child can spot capital letters and different punctuation marks. Can they explain why the author has used a question mark or an exclamation mark?
We have also been learning about the importance of eating a balanced diet.
The children have been exploring different types of food and discussing how eating a variety of foods can help us stay healthy. We have talked about making balanced choices and why our bodies need different foods to help us grow, learn and stay active.
🏠 Try it at home: At mealtimes, talk about the different foods on your plate. How many different types of food can your child identify?
