We can’t quite believe it, but this has been our last full week together in Hazel Class – and what a fantastic week it’s been. We’ve packed in so much: stories, maths challenges, poetry performances and lots of smiles along the way.

English – The Whales’ Song (with our own twist!)
We’ve really enjoyed getting stuck into The Whales’ Song and learning to retell it using our Talk for Writing actions. We’ve got so good at it now that we can retell the whole story!

Once we knew the story well, we started making it our own. We came up with new characters, swapped the gifts the whales received, and changed the endings to create our own versions of the story. There were some brilliant ideas, everything from slippery sea snakes to magical underwater adventures!

We loved writing our own stories and even more, we enjoyed sharing them with each other. Mr Cummings and Miss Martinez were so impressed with how much progress we’ve made in our writing – we really have come a long way this year!

Maths – Measuring Mayhem!
This week has been all about measuring. We’ve been exploring length and weight using rulers and scales. We measured classroom objects, then compared them using words like longer, shorter, heavier, lighter, double, and half.

Some of our favourite challenges were trying to find things that weighed exactly 100g, and guessing which objects would be heavier or lighter. We were surprised by how tricky it was – especially when something small turned out to weigh more than something big!

It’s been lovely to see how confident we’ve become with measuring and comparing – and how much fun we’ve had doing it.

Performance Poetry – Inspired by Nature
After our brilliant trip to Beacon Fell, we had loads of ideas for our poetry. We started by listing all the interesting things we’d seen – twisty roots, mossy logs, fluttering leaves, and even a squirrel or two!

We then went on a sensory walk around school to collect more describing words, thinking carefully about what we could hear, see and feel. Back in class, we used our favourite words and phrases to write our own nature poems.

Once we had written them, we practised saying them out loud with actions and expression. Everyone performed their poem in front of the class, and it was so lovely to see how confidently everyone spoke. There were big smiles, big voices, and a big round of applause at the end!

A Huge Thank You
As this is our last full week together in Hazel Class, Mr Cummings and Miss Martinez want to say a big thank you to all the children for their amazing efforts this year. You’ve worked so hard, supported each other, and made this class a really special one. We’re so proud of every single one of you.

And a heartfelt thank you to all the parents and carers too, your support, encouragement and kindness this year have meant so much. It’s been a real team effort, and we’re very grateful.

Let’s enjoy our last few days together – Hazel Class, you’ve been brilliant!

Have a lovely weekend – and enjoy the heatwave!
