What a brilliant week we’ve had in Hazel Class! The children have been busy sharing stories, exploring capacity in fun and practical ways, and working together with great enthusiasm. Here’s what we’ve been up to…

Coming Together with Willow Class

We started the week by teaming up with Willow Class to share the stories we’ve been learning in English. It was lovely to listen to each other and compare what was happening in our stories – spotting similarities in the characters and big differences in the endings! We each created our own story maps, which helped us retell the stories in our own words and picture the key events more clearly.

In maths, we continued learning about statistics and became expert data collectors. We surveyed each other to find out our favourite foods, colours, sports and superheroes, then created bright and colourful box graphs to showcase our results. It was great to see the children working so confidently with data and using mathematical language like “most popular”, “least popular” and “more than”.

English

There was some excitement this week when we discovered the Highway Rat had escaped! We quickly got to work creating wanted posters with drawings and detailed descriptions to help people spot him. The children used some fantastic adjectives such as greedy, clever and sneaky, and thought carefully about what clues would be most helpful.

Later in the week, we looked closely at the structure of the story and broke it down into five important parts. We used drama to act out each event and thought about how the characters were thinking and feeling at each stage. This helped us explore the story in more depth and brought the characters to life through expression and movement.

Maths

This week’s maths was all about volume and capacity, and it gave us a chance to get hands-on and practical. We explored different containers and used water to find out which held more or less. We made predictions first, then tested them using jugs and measuring tools.

The children enjoyed working in small groups to pour, measure and compare. There were lots of great discussions about which containers were “full”, “half full”, “nearly empty” and “overflowing”! We learned that the tallest container doesn’t always hold the most, and that thinking like a mathematician sometimes means being surprised by the results. It was a lively and enjoyable way to build our understanding.

Dates to Remember:

  • Sports Day – Get ready to cheer us on! – Friday 23rd May
  • STEM Café – A chance for families to join us for exciting science, technology, engineering and maths activities – Wednesday 21st May
              • 1:45-2:15pm Key Stage 1
              • 2:30- 3:00pm Key Stage 2

It’s been another busy and rewarding week in Hazel Class. The children have shown great curiosity, creativity and teamwork across every subject.

Thank you for your continued support – and we hope you all enjoy a sunny and restful weekend.

Warm wishes,
Mr Cummings and Miss Martinez
