Last week, Year 5 had an unforgettable trip to Park View in Lytham, where we stepped into the shoes of real-life explorers and survival experts! Our exciting day was all about learning the essential skills you might need if you were trekking through the Amazon Rainforest in South America.
From the moment we arrived, we were ready for adventure. First, we learned how to safely build and light a campfire—an important survival skill. With careful guidance, we discovered how to collect the right materials, arrange them properly, and get a fire started. It took teamwork, patience, and problem-solving, but we did it! Once our fires were going, we were able to toast marshmallows, which was definitely a highlight of the day. They were delicious!
Next, we worked in groups to build dens. In the Amazon Rainforest, shelter is essential for protection from weather, insects, and animals, so we used natural materials to construct our own shelters. It was fantastic to see everyone working together, sharing ideas, and creating strong, safe dens.
This trip linked perfectly to our Geography learning about South America, particularly the Amazon Rainforest and the fascinating civilisations that have lived there. We imagined what it might be like to journey through dense trees, rely on nature for survival, and adapt to a challenging environment. These hands-on experiences helped us understand how people in the past—and even today—use skills and knowledge to live in such conditions.
It also supported our English work, where we have been reading and writing adventure stories and survival guides. The trip gave us real-life inspiration for describing settings, building tension, and writing about survival situations. We can now use our senses and experiences to make our writing even more vivid and exciting.
We are incredibly proud of all the children, who behaved brilliantly throughout the day. They showed excellent teamwork, resilience, and enthusiasm, making the trip a huge success.
What a fantastic day of learning, adventure, and fun—Year 5 truly rose to the challenge!
