Year 5 Clay Workshop at Corpus Christi
Year 5 recently had a fantastic opportunity to visit Corpus Christi High School, where they took part in an exciting clay sculpture workshop led by the Head of Art & Design and Technology. The visit was a wonderful chance for the children to experience a secondary school setting while learning new creative skills from a specialist teacher.
Linking perfectly with our current Amazonian topic, the children were encouraged to design and create clay sculptures inspired by the Amazon rainforest. From detailed animals and insects to plants and river features, their ideas were imaginative and thoughtfully planned. It was lovely to see how confidently they applied their knowledge of the Amazon to their designs.
During the workshop, the children were introduced to a range of clay techniques, including shaping, joining, and adding texture. The Head of DT shared her expertise brilliantly, guiding the children step by step and helping them to refine their creations. The pupils showed great focus, creativity, and resilience, taking care to improve their work and support one another throughout the session.
We are excited to share that this is just the first part of the project. Once the clay sculptures have been fired in the kiln, we will be returning to Corpus Christi to paint and varnish our work—bringing our Amazon-inspired creations to life with colour and detail.
This experience has not only developed the children’s practical design and technology skills, but also encouraged problem-solving, patience, and attention to detail. It was fantastic to see the children so engaged and proud of what they achieved.
We are extremely grateful to Corpus Christi for welcoming us so warmly and for sharing such valuable skills with our pupils. Year 5 left feeling inspired, and we look forward to continuing to build on these creative skills back in the classroom
