This week in Year 5, we had a fantastic time celebrating National Numeracy Day 2026 with a focus on money, teamwork and problem-solving. The children were fully engaged in a range of practical, hands-on activities designed to help them understand the value of money in a fun and meaningful way.

Throughout the day, pupils worked in teams to complete a series of money-based challenges. These included budgeting activities, calculating totals, giving change, and making decisions about spending and saving. By working collaboratively, the children were able to share ideas, support one another and develop their teamwork skills, showing great resilience and cooperation.

A key focus of our learning was oracy. Pupils were encouraged to talk through their thinking, explain their choices and justify their answers. This helped to deepen their understanding and build confidence in communicating mathematical ideas clearly. It was wonderful to hear such rich discussions, with children using key vocabulary and reasoning to support their conclusions.

We also explored reasoning skills, with pupils tackling problems that required careful thinking and planning. Not every strategy worked the first time—and that was all part of the learning! The children embraced a trial-and-error approach, learning from their mistakes and refining their methods to reach the correct answers. This experience reinforced the importance of perseverance and showed that making mistakes is an essential part of learning.

By applying their maths skills in real-life contexts, pupils developed a stronger awareness of money and its value, helping them see how numeracy plays an important role in everyday life.

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, determination and teamwork shown by Year 5 throughout the day. It was a brilliant celebration of numeracy and a reminder that maths can be both practical and enjoyable!

Well done, Year 5!
