What a lovely week we’ve had in Hazel Class!
We’ve been so busy learning new things, using our imaginations and thinking about how we can be kind and thoughtful just like Jesus. Here’s a peek at all the things we’ve been up to…
English Adventures – Under the Sea with The Whale’s Song
This week, we dived back into The Whale’s Song and continued our magical journey with Lilly. We started by making some exciting predictions about what might happen next – there were some fantastic ideas, from Lilly meeting a whale to the ocean becoming full of music! After reading a little more of the story, we made new predictions and then acted our the key parts, exploring what we thought about what the characters were thinking and feeling throughout the story.
One part we really enjoyed was when Lilly’s grandmother described the whales. We explored the beautiful adjectives she used, like graceful, gentle, and mysterious. Then, we looked at other sea creatures like jellyfish, dolphins and even sea turtles, and came up with our own descriptive words. Some of our favourites were “graceful”, “slippery” and “gliding”. We put these words into our own sentences – and Mr Cummings was so impressed with how creative we were!
Maths Moments – Telling Time with Our Day
In maths, we’ve been completing our work about shapes – discussing, describing and indentifying 3D shapes in the classroom! We even had the chance to build using 3D shape, discussing their properties and if they could stack and if they had flat or curves faces.
We then continued learning all about time words and how to order the events in our day. We talked about what happens in the morning (like brushing our teeth and coming to school), in the afternoon (like lunchtime and playtime), and in the evening (like going home and reading stories). We used words like before, after, first, then, and next to help us explain what we do and when.
We had fun sequencing events of daily routines and matching them with the right time of day. Some of us even created our own little timelines! It helped us realise just how busy our days are!
A Very Special Visitor – The Mary Statue
Something very special happened this week – the Mary Statue came to visit our school! Every class had time to be with Mary and take part in a quiet reflection. In Hazel Class, we thought about who Mary is and how she can help us to talk to God.
We had peaceful assemblies and time in our classroom to pray with Mary. We talked about all the things Mary might help us pray for – some children thought about their families, others thought about people who are poorly, and some even prayed for peace around the world.
We each had a choice – some of us decorated a rose petal and wrote a prayer on it, asking Mary to help us with something special. Others chose to write a prayer on a footprint, thinking about how we can follow in Jesus’s footsteps by being kind, forgiving and loving.
