Wow – what a week we’ve had in Hazel Class! We’ve been authors, mathematicians, explorers and all-round superstars. There’s been so much going on, we can’t wait to tell you all about it!
English – Story Swaps and Super Predictions!
We’ve had so much fun becoming authors this week! We finished our Highway Rat stories and shared them with our friends. But these weren’t just ordinary Highway Rat stories! We changed the characters (some of us even had pizza-loving badgers!), swapped the food, and came up with brand new endings. There were twists, surprises and lots of laughs!
We listened so carefully to each other’s stories and gave brilliant feedback too – Mr Cummings and Miss Martinez said we were like real authors at our very own book launch!
Then we dived into our next story adventure… The Whale’s Song by Dyan Sheldon. We’ve read the beginning and made some amazing predictions about what might happen next. It’s so exciting – we’re desperate to find out if we’re right!
Maths – Shape Detectives on the Case!
This week in Maths, we’ve become shape detectives! We’ve explored all kinds of regular and irregular 2D shapes, building pictures using strips of paper and naming their sides and vertices like true shape experts.
But the fun didn’t stop there! We then moved on to 3D shapes, where we discovered just how interesting shapes like spheres, pyramids and cubes really are. We counted faces (that’s the flat parts), edges and vertices, and sorted them based on whether their surfaces were flat or curved. Did you know that a cone only has one edge and one vertex?
Topic – Explorers, Codes and Time Travel!
Hazel Class turned into real-life explorers this week! We finished our learning about Lucy Cheesman, the fearless scientist who travelled to Papua New Guinea nearly 100 years ago! We packed our explorer suitcases (no iPads allowed – just compasses, sketchbooks and insect jars!) and imagined what her journey would have been like.
We even went on our own top-secret mission, following maps around the school to hunt for clues and crack a secret code. We felt just like Lucy Cheesman, bravely exploring the unknown!
Then we travelled through time! We made a timeline of famous explorers and learned who came first, using chronological order. To top it all off, we created our own “This Is Your Life” books all about Lucy Cheesman – full of facts, pictures and adventure. What a way to finish our topic!
