Bringing The Princess and the Pea to Life
Year 4 had a brilliant time exploring The Princess and the Pea through drama and performance.
We began by reading and identifying the key moments of the story, thinking carefully about what was happening and why each part was important. The children worked together to break the story into clear sections, ready to bring it to life.
Next, we stepped into role and acted out each part of the story. Using freeze frames, the children paused at key moments to create powerful still images of the scene. This allowed them to really focus on what was happening and how the characters might be feeling.
A big focus of the lesson was thinking about characters’ thoughts and emotions. The children were encouraged to show this through their facial expressions and body language. We saw some fantastic acting, from the worried prince searching for a real princess, to the uncomfortable princess trying to sleep on the enormous pile of mattresses!
As we moved through each scene, the children shared their ideas about what their character might be thinking, saying and feeling, helping to deepen their understanding of the story and prepare them for their own writing.
It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm, creativity and teamwork throughout the lesson. The classroom was full of energy, imagination and some truly excellent performances!
