Year 5 Learning Blog – This Week’s Adventures in Space!
We’ve had an exciting few weeks in Year 5 as we’ve continued our journey through our Space topic. The children have been absolutely fascinated by our focus text, Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover, and it has sparked some brilliant discussions and writing.
This week, we explored how Curiosity was built, how it travels across the Martian surface, and why it was sent to Mars in the first place. The children loved discovering the challenges involved in landing a rover on another planet—and they were especially captivated by the idea that Curiosity is still sending information back to Earth today!
Alongside our reading, we’ve been learning about the features of explanation texts. The children have been identifying and using:
Formal language appropriate for an audience
Modal verbs (such as might, could, and must) to show possibility and certainty
Parenthesis to add extra detail
Relative clauses to explain information more precisely
Using these skills, the children have written their own explanation texts all about Curiosity and another all about astronauts—how they train, what they wear, and what they do in space. We’ve been so impressed by how confidently they’ve applied their grammar skills to make their writing clear, factual, and engaging.
It’s been wonderful to see their curiosity driving their learning. We’re looking forward to seeing how their final astronaut explanation pieces develop next week.
Thank you for your continued support,
