Over the last couple of weeks, our Year 5 children have been getting stuck into their gymnastics unit, and we’ve been so impressed with the skills, focus and teamwork they’ve shown.
We have been exploring two key elements:
Counter Balances
Children have been working with a partner to create stable shapes where each person relies on the other to stay balanced. This has been a brilliant way to develop trust, body control and communication. We’ve seen everything from simple shoulder-to-shoulder balances to more adventurous ideas as their confidence has grown!
Tension Work
The class has also been learning how to use tension in their bodies to help make their shapes strong and controlled. This means tightening their muscles, holding positions with precision, and thinking carefully about where their weight is placed. These skills are tricky, but Year 5 have really risen to the challenge.
✨ Creating Sequences
We’re now moving towards putting these skills together in short sequences. Children are beginning to link balances, transitions and tension work into smooth routines, thinking about flow, timing, and presentation. It’s been wonderful seeing their creativity shine as they experiment with different ways to move and perform.
Overall, the enthusiasm and teamwork shown in every lesson have been fantastic. We’re very proud of the progress they’re making and can’t wait to see how their sequences develop over the next few weeks!
